La Rolex Giraglia Cup è la più affascinante tra le regate di altura nel mediterraneo. La sua storia risale al 1952. A volerla furono l’allora presidente dello Yacht Club Italiano, Beppe Croce, René Levainville, presidente dello Yacht Club de France e Franco Gavagnin. Il principio sul quale si basava la competizione era di ristabilire quello spirito amichevole, lealte e sportivo, tra due nazioni. Italia e Francia, che uscivano stremate dal secondo conflitto mondiale. La prima competizione si tenne l’anno successivo, il 1953, alla partenza vi erano solo 22 imbarcazioni. Nel corso degli anni i partecipanti sono aumentati costantemente, e oggi superano i 100 iscritti. Si parte da Sanremo, per la classica regata notturna di 60 miglia che collega Italia e Francia. Si crea quel triangolo perfetto: Sanremo – Saint Tropez – Giraglia – Monaco. Triangolo che vede nell’isolotto della Giraglia il suo apice meridionale,poi rotta verso le acque del porto di Monte Carlo. La Rolex Giraglia Cup dimostra ancora una volta di essere un ottimo “melange” tra agonismo, passione, sport e “joie de vivre”.
The Rolex Giraglia Cup is the most fascinating offshore race in the Mediterranean. Its history dates back to 1952. At will were the then president of the Yacht Club Italiano, Beppe Croce, René levainville, president of the Yacht Club de France and Franco gavagnin. The principle on which the competition was based was to re-establish that friendly, loyal and sporting spirit between two nations, Italy and France, which were exhausted by the Second World War. The first competition was held the following year, 1953, at the start there were only 22 boats. Over the years, the number of participants has increased steadily, and today there are more than 100. We start from Sanremo, for the classic 60-mile night race that connects Italy and France. Creating that perfect triangle: Sanremo – Saint Tropez – Giraglia – Monaco. Triangle that sees in the islet of the Giraglia its southern apex, then turned towards the waters of the port of Monte Carlo. The Rolex Giraglia Cup proves once again to be an excellent “melange” between racing, passion, sport and “joie de vivre”.
